Peru, an open-air studio
Peru has attracted major international productions with the diversity of its landscapes and the richness of its culture. Many regions have become veritable cinematic “characters”:
- Cusco and Machupicchu are among the iconic locations in the blockbuster Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023) . Several spectacular scenes were filmed in the citadel of Machupicchu, as well as in the cobbled streets and historic squares of Cusco , capital of the ancient Inca empire. The film also highlights the mysteries of the Nasca Lines , filmed from the air to reveal the full extent of these ancient geoglyphs, as well as Tarapoto , a city nestled between jungle and mountains , considered one of the main gateways to the Peruvian Amazon.
- In Paddington in Peru (2024) , the famous British bear returns to the footsteps of his origins. The film features the city of Lima with its contrasts between colonial architecture and modernity, the Andean landscapes around Cusco , and the depths of the Amazon rainforest, particularly in the Madre de Dios region , near Puerto Maldonado , an area rich in biodiversity.
- Two Werner Herzog classics, Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1972) and Fitzcarraldo (1982) , were filmed in remote areas of the Peruvian Amazon. The natural settings include the banks of the Camisea River and the surroundings of the city of Iquitos . These locations enhance the oppressive and mystical atmosphere of the films, and speak to the wild and untamed nature of the jungle.
- Finally, the international series La Reina del Sur chose the streets of Lima’s historic center for the filming of several sequences. The Plaza Mayor, the baroque facades of Lima Cathedral, and the typical colonial balconies that line the avenues of the heart of the capital are notably visible.
Ten regions in the spotlight at the Film Market
The Peruvian stand at Cannes will highlight ten key regions with strong cinematic and tourist potential: Lima, Amazonas, Junín, Lambayeque, Áncash , La Libertad, Loreto, Arequipa, Piura and Tumbes . These territories are showcased through immersive scenography and visual media illustrating the country’s extraordinary diversity: wild beaches, Andean highlands, lush jungle, deserts, colonial cities, etc.
Cinema, a vector of travel inspiration
Through its website www.filminperu.com , PROMPERÚ offers a catalog of filming locations open to professionals in the sector, but also to those curious who wish to follow in the footsteps of their favorite films. Each production filmed in Peru becomes an invitation to travel, an original and immersive way to discover a country where all stories are possible .
